For many college-aged students, the first thought that comes to mind when thinking about an accounting-related event is, "How long is this thing going to take?" I had a similar thought when showing up to this year's Scholars Institute. To my surprise, by the end of day two, my friends and I were all wishing we could stay another night.

Pursuing a career in academia as an accounting professor entails, on average, an additional five more years of being a student. Though, this time, the school is willing to pay and invest in you! Here’s what it takes to become a professor as we dive into more detail about what they actually do – yes, they do more than just teach students!

I was originally a music business and music performance double-major in college. That changed after I realized how difficult the job market would be upon graduation. Instead, I struck a balance by pursuing an accounting major and singing in a community choir in the evening. Shortly after joining the community choir, I was asked to join the board. I figured, why not? As an accounting major, I felt I could bring some useful skills to the table. Little did I know that serving on the board would provide me fulfillment and skills beneficial to my career.

The two best things you can do to launch your career in public accounting are to get a quality education and obtain experience in the field before graduating from college. According to college career services counselors and recruiters from public accounting firms ranging from small to Big Four, there are things students need to know to get their ideal internships.

Budgeting doesn’t have to become brain surgery. By doing certain things and watching spending habits, you can manage your finances and not become overwhelmed with debt.
